Keynote Address
In keeping with the theme "New Order of the Ages" our presentation will be encouraging the designers of tomorrow to think big.  As designers we need to appeal to people's highest aspirations. We are the storytellers, the conduit between ideas and action. We not only make things to look good, but have the capacity to decide the ingredients. Our country and our world face intense and immediate challenges. We must rise to meet them. It starts with our philosophical core, emanates  through our ideas, and manifests itself through our actions. As designers we must believe in and act on our ability to shape a broader destiny.

Bio: Ben Davis
Ben Davis runs two SF-based graphic design and communication firms. In 1995 he founded Words Pictures Ideas with the guiding mantra of “Do Good. Have Fun. Learn. Make a Living.” In 2008, he opened a firm dedicated to purpose-driven design with the unlikely and unwieldy name I Shot Him Because I Loved Him, Damn Him with the simple mission “Changing Hearts, Minds and Habits.”

Ben has a passion for legacy projects—major civic and social projects that will create generational positive impacts. His firm has developed the naming, visual identities and outreach materials for public and private projects totaling more than $20 billion worth of investment. Active projects include the Bay Bridge Seismic Safety Project, TransBay Transit Center, Presidio Parkway, and Stanford Medical Center Renewal Project. Recent acknowledgements include a International Webby Award for best website in government, a sweep of four Compass Awards from the Transportation Marketing and Communications Association, listing in Communications Arts 15th Interactive Design Annual, and multiple "Site of the Day" listings from Adobe, CommArts and FWA.

Bio: Carl Bender
Carl graduated from the Academy of Art University's MFA graphic design program in 2009 and is currently working as a Senior Designer at I Shot Him Because I Loved Him, Damn Him, a purpose-driven firm with the mission of “Changing Hearts, Minds and Habits.” Prior to and during grad school Carl worked for over five years as a Senior Interactive Designer at firms in Philadelphia and San Francisco, where he put his time into projects for corporate clients like General Electric, GM, Cartoon Network, Adobe, Ten Thousand Villages and Time Warner.

Carl believes strongly in having fun, being curious and enjoying what you do: and when not “Changing Hearts, Minds and Habits,” Carl spends his free time and energy creating artwork for bands and record labels, and collaborates with various friends on a and a handful of other side projects.
